It seems that these days nearly everyone has a blog. They are used for personal, professional and educational purposes. This class puts a heavy emphasis on communicating quickly and openly through the form of this blog.
When a large quantity of blogs present an interest to an individual, it can quickly become quite a task to keep up with the latest articles posted to the blogs. RSS can be used as a solution to this problem. Most blogs these days offer their content in a standardized, machine readable format such as RSS or Atom. By using a feed aggregator such as Google Reader or Bloglines, a reader of many different blogs can centralize the content into one location. They work by periodically querying all of the blogs that the user has subscribed to over the feed channel (RSS, Atom, etc.) to determine if any new content has been posted. An interface, web based in the case of the above examples, is used to display the latest content of the blogs to the user.
RSS and the syndication formats can be used to deliver much more than just text to interested users. Podcasts, which are digital media files such as audio or video, are also very widely distributed using online syndication. Capable feed reader applications can subscribe and keep podcast media up to date.
I personally use Google Reader to subscribe to this blog and many others.
