“CUIL” ………

On july 28 2008, a new search engine was added to the list of search engines. So what? Its just another one!!

Well the interesting thing about it is that it was started by 3 former Google employees Anna Patterson, Russell Power and Louis Monier who were the key architects of Google search engine.

HUH so what?

Well, it was a bold move to leave the mother-ship GOOGLE and start up something to compete with it. Also they have been innovative and smart enough to raise over 30 million $ in VC. Some of these traits are must to become an entrepreneur.

I like the search home page. It is as simple as Google with a black background.

Then these guys claim to have a secret recipe that reduces the price spent by SEARCH engine giants on indexing the web and actual searches done by users. So, they do not have to invest huge amount in hardware!!

The relevance in which the results are displayed on CUIL is analyzed based on the content of the web pages (rather than the assigning priority to pages based on inbound links like Google). This means the results are automatically categorized for CUIL, making search easier and cheaper.

Moreover, CUIL also claims that it does not save the users search activities and IP addresses (which I think is debatable as they at least need to save the former in order to improve further).

What so cool about CUIL!!

I like the way CUIL tabs different results and gives rather long description of each result displayed. This saves you the time that you would have spent in clicking and reading through each result before realizing that it was not something you were looking for. Alongside the results it gives a thumbnail sized picture/photograph related to the search which gives more of a personal touch.

I find the result websites more clearly marked compared to other search engines.

End note:

I still use Google and I believe it will take a lot more publicity by CUIL to become this popular. Also, these guys need to work a little more on accuracy to compete with the veterans. You may be disappointed sometimes with CUIL, like if you type name of a journal article, in most cases you may get no results, unlike Google.

But!! It is still a good start…..

There was some not so great news from statcounter for cuil recently. Somehow, cuil cannot retain its users.

Why?

I adored the way CUIL tabs results simplifying the search even though I too noticed that the search is not comprehensive. I think people are so used to the one column list of results that they refuse to acknowledge the new style.

CUIL has some inherent flaws and probably several technical which I am not aware of, and they need to improve further before they become just a passing website with a glamorous launch.

Anyway I do think they have been innovative !!!
